Everyday, we have at least three meals, which could be more nutritious if we pick the right food in the right amount.
Generally,veggies and fruits come last when we need to decide what to eat.
A colorful platter looks more appealing but we need to know what we are consuming!
Lets discuss about the greens which can work wonders for our well-being!
The color is Chlorophyll and it increases detoxification, blood cell production and circulation in the body.
Green food contains Lutein and Zeanithin which reduces the risk of macular degradation and cataracts in the eyes.Potential vitamins and antioxidants like Vitamin C,K, Folic Acid and potassium can help prevent diabetes and risk of pancreatic cancer.
Research suggests consumption of greens help protect against malignant cell growth and development.
From a diet point of view,they are low in calories and fats and are very fibrous.
*People who are on Vitamin K antagonists(drugs that reduce blood clotting) must limit the use of Green Veggies.
Skin benefits from greens as it slows down aging due to presence of antioxidants.
Lets throw some light on very commonly found greens:
Aloe Vera:
Healing Agent for centuries. It is known to lubricate Joints. Reports say it is known to heal ailments like ulcers,skin disorders,burns,prostate problems, yeast infections.
It contains vitamin A,C and E which are antioxidants and polysaccharides, enzymes,amino acids,minerals ,Vitamin B12 and Folic acid.
It protects the immune system while slowing down aging process.
While purchasing any commercial Aloe product,we can check for the,"International Aloe Science Council Mark(IASC)". #IASC
It can be used as gel,juice or fresh from the plant. We can add Aloe to water to relieve heartburn,indigestion and constipation too.
Broccoli:
It has cholesterol lowering and detoxification benefits. It is Fibrous,has VitaminC,K,B9 and potassium,manganese,iron.
It contains 89% water and improves immune system because of Kaempferol and Sulphoraphane.
Carotenoids provide better eye health.
Vitamin C helps in delayed aging by preventing oxidative stress
It can be eaten raw ,as salads, fried, steamed,in soup or in juice.
Although,people having hypothyroidism may avoid it as it interferes with iodine usage by thyroid gland.
Grapes:
It contains 81% water,little calories, minimal fat and lots of vitamins and minerals like A,B,C,K,Folic Acid which makes it a super antioxidant. It has flavonoids which Improves blood circulation and potassium lowers blood pressure.
It has anti-inflammatory properties and improves skin problems.
People who underwent surgery should limit as it may slow blood clotting.
Proanthocyanidins in grapes preserve collagen and elastin in skin.
Grapes can be consumes as a part of salad,juice,raw or in desserts.
Spinach:
It is a low calorie food with 91% water and rich source of Vitamin A,C,K and minerals like Iron and Folic acid.
Spinach contains oxalates and may block absorption of calcium and iron in stomach.
To prevent this, it should be cooked in several changes of water.
Patients with kidney stones should avoid spinach.
Its loaded with antioxidants which works wonders for your system and skin.
It can be taken raw,cooked or in the form of juice.
Apart from the above discussed greens which are very common in our lives,we can also pick from the following choices:
Basil,Mint,Oregano,lemongrass,parsley,lemon,pears,kiwis,cucumber,celeries,
coriander.
